For GV Prakash, Thalaivaa is his fifth collaboration with director Vijay and the first ever with Ilayathalapathy Vijay. When the teaser for Thalaivaa was fi rst released in June, it garnered rave reviews especially with regards to its BGM. I am curious to know how the GV Prakash-Vijay combination belts out musical magic each time. “Vijay is one of my favourite directors. He gave me my second fi lm, Kireedom, starring none other than Ajith. After that, we continued to work in his subsequent fi lms like Madarasapattinam, Deiva Thirumagal, Thaandavam and now Thalaivaa. Ours has been a very good and successful combination,” says GV as he opens up about working with director Vijay.
Actor Vijay and Santhanam have sung a song together in Thalaivaa – Vaanganna Vanakkangna – which has become a chartbuster. Commenting about the star, he says, “This is my fi rst fi lm with actor Vijay. He is my favorite hero and I have always been a big fan of his. I thoroughly enjoyed working on his film. All of his fi lms from Khushi to Gilli, Pokkiri, are my favourites. I have grown up watching his fi lms. The song sung by Vijay was the fi rst one I was handling with him.” He continues, “I am really happy with the result, because I was anticipating this moment. I wanted it to be a smash hit. Vaanganna Vanakkangna is number one in every countdown. In fact, I have also done a cameo in that song. It was a lot of fun with AL Vijay and Ilayathalapathy.”
Yaar Indha Saalai Oram is a melody sung by Saindhavi and GV and is a popular number too. “The song is a duet. Saindhavi has been singing for Vijay since Madrasapattinam and Vijay wants Saindhavi to sing a song in every fi lm of his. As people relate to us as a couple, they really take the song to their hearts,” he says.
Ask him about the popularity he gained through viral marketing on social networking platforms, and GV says, “Social media plays a big role in boosting the promotions of a fi lm and increasing the popularity of the content. But we must remember that this is only a part of the promotions. It does not constitute the exact audience. Social network might be a plus. Ilayathalapathy’s audience is much bigger. It is not just about Facebook Twitter. It is more than that. That’s why the song Vaanganna Vanakkangna has its own charm to it.”
GV Prakash adds, “Thalaivaa is a complete commercial entertainer. It demanded a powerful and impactful BGM and that is exactly what we have delivered. There is more to the magic on screen!”
