Many know director Gautham Vasudev Menon to be a brilliant director. However, what many do not know is that he is also a compassionate boss who treats those who work with him with kindness and dignity.
Standing testimony to this fact is a statement by director Magizh Thirumeni, who at one point in time worked with Gautham Menon as his assistant director.
Recalling an incident that happened in his life, Magizh, who is today a successful director himself, said, “Those were the days when Gautam was actually going through a difficult time financially. It was after he had made the Hindi remake of Minnale and was waiting to do Kaakha Kaakha with Surya. We all knew he did not have money but I was in a desperate situation. I had a date and literally no money. I did not know who else to turn to for help.
“So, mustering all the courage I had, I went and told Gautham with great difficulty that I had a date that evening and that I needed a particular sum to manage. He got up, pulled out his wallet. There were very few notes in it. But without a word, he pulled out twice the amount I had asked him for and gave it to me, saying, ‘ You are going on a date. The money you ask will not be enough. Take this as well.’ That is Gautham Menon for you. He did not only teach us how to be good directors but also taught us to be good human beings. He is an institution in himself.”
