Indian boys Mariappan Thangavelu and Varun Singh Bhati did the country proud on Friday as they won gold and bronze respectively in the high jump event at the Paralympics being held in Rio.
Twenty-year-old Thangavelu, who hails from a Periyavadagampatti, a small village near Salem in Tamil Nadu, won the gold with a jump of 1.89 metres in the high jump event . His nearest rival was American Sam Grewe, who claimed silver. Varun Singh Bhatti took the bronze and it was indeed a proud moment for the nation as two Indian flags were hoisted on the podium.
These victories have warmed the hearts of all Indians, including celebrities from the Tamil film world who took to social media networks to express their appreciation for both the athletes.

Director Mohan Raja of Thani Oruvan fame expressed his happiness by retweeting congratulatory messages that were being posted to the boys. Director M Rajesh of Boss Engira Baskaran fame tweeted, “Congratulations #MariyappanThangavelu for gold medal at #Rio2016Paralympics…truly inspiring.”
But it was music director Thaman‘s tweet that summed up the mood in the industry. He said, “Congrats to #Mariyappanthangavelu fr #Gold & #Varun Singh fr bronze in #Paralympics.This is truly a proud moment for the entire nation.” (sic)
