Deeply pained by the suffering of Tamil Nadu’s farmers, actor Vivekh has announced that he will not celebrate the harvest festival of Pongal this year.
Every day, scores of farmers in Tamil Nadu are dying, unable to come to terms with the way their crops are withering for lack of water. What has compounded the problem for farmers is that they are now unable to even borrow money because of the demonetisation move of the Central government.
Their deaths and cries have moved the hearts of those in the state with many expressing concern about the need for the government to go to their rescue.
Vivekh, who took to Twitter to make the annonucement, said, “Indha Varudam Naan Pongal Kondada Maaten. Payir Karuguvadhu Paarthu Vivasayigalvidum Kaneer Idhayam Pizhakiradhu. (This year, I will not celebrate Pongal. The tears farmers shed on looking at their withering crops are heart breaking.”
