Most people know about the cinematographic skills of ace cinematographer P C Sreeram. But not many are aware of how he once took on a rowdy to complete a film, that many now consider a classic.
Yes, P C Sreeram, who was the cameraman for the Mani Ratnam classic Nayakan, featuring Kamal Haasan and Saranya Ponvannan in the lead, actually slapped a rowdy looking to create a problem on the film’s sets.
Writer Bava Chelladurai disclosed details of this incident at the trailer launch of Mysskin‘s film Savarakkathi.
Speaking at the trailer launch function of Savarakkathi, Bava Chelladurai said, “It was the last shot that had to be canned in Nayakan. Shooting was going on in Adyar and the team was racing against time as the sun was just about to set. Kamal was getting ready for the shot when a rowdy arrived on the sets and began picking a quarrel with the team. He stalled proceedings and demanded a sum of Rs 50,000 to allow the team to shoot there in peace.
“The team kept pleading with him in a bid to make him see reason but the man was adamant and in no mood to relent. After waiting for a while, P C Sreeram, who was intent on completing the shot with the beautiful sunset in the background, walked up to the man, gave him a tight slap and asked him to get out. The stunned man backed off. The team then shot the scene and completed the film. After canning a beautiful shot, P C sir turned to the production guys and enquired. ‘ How much was he asking?,’ he asked them and they replied, ‘Rs 50,000.’ He then said, ‘Give him Rs 60,000.’ ”
Bava Chelladurai said, ” P C Sreeram reacted in such a fashion so as to ensure that he did not miss out on the orange background, provided by the setting sun. I am so proud to be living in the same society in which great technicians like P C Sreeram live.”
