THAANDAVAM

“I want to experiment with all genres,” is how director AL Vijay expressed his earnest desire when he made his debut movie, Kireedam. True enough, he has carved a niche for himself with his aesthetic style. Be it Kireedam which established Ajith in a new avatar, or Poi Solla Porom that achieved incredulous success, the director has been showcasing his adeptness in handling any subject. While Madarasapattinam took us back to an ancient Chennai, Deiva Thirumagal (DTM), regarded a milestone in Vikram’s career, was an emotional drama. The moviemaker is now set to create magic in a new style.
Stepping out of his comfort zone of romance and family genres, Vijay’s upcoming film Thaandavam will be an exceptional treat for the audiences. Chiyaan’s fans might have seen their idol flexing his muscles and beating up baddies, but Thaandavam will be strikingly out of his usual style, and will see him in a new incarnation.
Director Vijay’s association with UTV Motion Pictures dates back to his commendable film, Poi Solla Porom (remake of the Hindi movie, Khosla Ka Ghosla). Witnessing his directorial proficiency, the producers had approached him to wield the megaphone for a big budget movie, which didn’t happen. But with his excellent work in Deiva Thirumagal, they decided to distribute and release the film worldwide. It is noteworthy that UTV Motion Pictures made an official announcement of Thaandavam prior to the release of DTM.
“Anushka held my hand and guided me through the times of difficulty in DTM, and now, it’s my turn,” jokes Vikram, while shedding light on his characterisation in this film. Vikram and Anushka Shetty’s classy clothes, as seen in the first look images, have already created a stir amongst fans.
The film went on floors from the first week of December, where the flashback scenes involving Vikram and Anushka were shot in and around Delhi. The crew deserves a special mention for having been able to shoot some important sequences at the iconic Jama Masjid, where permission is not usually granted. According to sources, since the monumental mosque plays an important backdrop in the film, the crew received an easy nod from the officials to shoot there. The spellbinding melody, Oru Paadhi Kanavu Neeyadi tuned by GV Prakash to the lyrics of Na Muthukumar was shot in the charming locales of Old Delhi.
The collaboration of Vijay and GV Prakash has been a treat for music lovers. The romantic melodies by this young music director in Vijay’s movies are evergreen hits, starting from Akkam Pakkam in Kireedam to Pookkal Pookkum Tharunam in Madaraspattinam, and Vizhigalil Oru Vaanavil in Deiva Thirumagal. And this one isn’t going be an exception. Since Vijay is busy pursuing the best locations in the USA for his next schedule, GV is sharing his music through Skype to ensure that the work is completed on time.
Nirav Shah, the man with the Midas touch, is back in Vijay’s camp to fascinate us with his cinematography. Besides Anushka, there is yet another attraction for the audiences; Amy Jackson plays an important role, while Santhanam is all set to tickle your funny bone with his trademark humour. The producers are planning to complete the shooting by the end of May, and release the film keeping in mind the other film – Mugamoodi with Jiiva, Narain and Pooja Hegde that is scheduled to hit screens between May and July.
