I ask him about his choice of title, considering Edhirneechal is a K Balachander classic. The direcor laughs, “I do like the Nagesh classic, but that’s not why I chose the title. It simply refl ects the story very well. That’s all.” Why this cast, though? Was there any reason he opted for these actors? “Actually, if you want to know the truth, they chose me. Actor Dhanush wanted to make a fi lm with Sivakarthikeyan in the lead. I had a story, and because of my connection with director Vetrimaaran, under whom I worked, when I narrated it, he asked me to take it to Dhanush. I did, and everyone liked it. So, that’s how I came into his project. People have told me that they are able to see a well-rounded actor in Sivakarthikeyan in this film. He’s delivered the emotions required in the story. He has fulfilled all expectations. When Dhanush saw the film, that’s what he said: that he’s a full, complete hero. And I’m happy with that.” A movie such as this must have been peppered with interesting incidents during the shoot, right? “Aside from the shoot at Andaman, there was really nothing much,” Durai shrugs. “It was interesting, but nothing that was newsworthy.” What’s his take on Ethir Neechal’s music? “The audio is a big hit, as you know” Durai says, with much enthusiasm. “Anirudh is a music director who knows the pulse of youngsters. He wanted to do something new for this album; he had all these novel ideas, like doing a song with only one charanam. I think it has reached people very well. Considering both his albums have become hits, I think he’s on the right route, when it comes to making music for the next generation.” Ask him about the cinematography for the movie and his answer is matter-of-fact, “Well, we’ve used whatever was necessary for the movie. The climax, especially, was very challenging, and we’ve managed to do a lot. Usually, this kind of climax has a budget that’s reserved for big stars, but we’ve accomplished this for our movie as well. The story revolves around Chennai. As for the songs, we’ve shot each of them according to the genre. If it’s a dream song, then it has to be a certain way; if it’s a realistic song, then that has to be shot a different way. I am grateful to the audiences as they have ensured the success of this film,” he finishes on a joyous note.
